Other People's Gardens

IMG_0703
Last Thursday we went out to a friend's to pick their beans. It was a combination of ton of beans, and leaving town for a couple weeks. I picked what I could see without digging around in the leaves. Reuben picked what daddy found for him, until the woodpile called his name. Daddy, well, he picked and picked. I made up for it by snapping, blanching, and freezing them. Three freezer bags full.

We had some for dinner last night with some rice and fish. It was a supper healthy dinner.

Then Justin brought home a huge bag of cucumbers after home teaching. Since I don't like to make huge messes, and make hot kitchens hotter, I opted for refrigerator pickles. Now, we have pickles coming out our ears. Reuben likes them a lot, and ate a handful last night.

I feel so industrious. I'd only feel more industrious if I had actually canned the stuff, or grown it myself. Truth be told, I'm more likely to can than garden. Girls with allergies will never find enough motivation to want to be industrious through gardening.

Looks like you guys are having a good Minnesota time up there!

Craigslist and freecycle are your best friend if you want to can and not garden.

On Tuesday we picked up a trunk full of apples from someone on freecycle and canned more than 40 quarts of applesauce. Someone on Craigslist is offering black walnuts today, and we're trying to decide if it's worth picking them up (we hate shelling walnuts!).

Take care!

I'm curious about how you made refrigerator pickles. Once Chris gets home, it's game on for some berry picking so we can pass Parker off to each other. :)
