Flood

So, my friend just had a flood in her apartment, and it reminded me of something.

Shortly, and I mean like a few days, before I met Justin my roommates and I were having a easy morning. Spring term would be starting in a few days, and I know I didn't have any plans for the day other than enjoy the day off in our cute little cinder-block-industrial-strength-carpet-basement apartment.

And then the bathroom started to smell, and brown grossness started coming up out of the drains, and rushing over the ledge of the shower. (Now, my roommates with better memories will be able to fill in the details, but it was shocking enough that I still remember that much.)

Pretty soon it was creeping its way down our hallway. Inch by inch, getting deeper and deeper, and smellier and smellier. Emily, always the one to do what needed to be done, went out to rescue laundry when we realized that the sewage was coming from more than just our bathroom. She rolled up her pants and plunged in to the nastiness.

I think I ran to my room and started throwing stuff onto the bed. I wasn't at my messiest in that room, but I've never been a flood ready kind of person.

Tammy and I were trapped in the apartment watching the flood waters, trying to decide if we should climb out the window, or brave the raging waters.

For some reason, I see Emily carrying Tammy through the few inches of water out the door.

We spent the day watching movies in Jenny and Peta's room. And when we came home at the end of the day the apartment smelled of chemicals because they said they cleaned the carpets.

That is one of my favorite memories of that hallway, the other is beating the boys at darts. We got pretty dang good at darts in that hallway... and even had masking tape across the floor to ensure regulation distance.

Did you know me then, what did I miss (or make up)?

Seriously, one of my favorite memories of that apartment!

Tammy had no bras in the apartment, which is why I had to brave the sewage water to go rescue her laundry! :)

I started reading, and thought, oh no, some poor sucker had a flood in their apartment too.... Then I clicked on the link. sigh. :)

I think I had moved out before this incident, because I vaguely remember visiting you spring term, and meeting Justin??

Anyhoo, ewww! That's gross! I hate dirty water back-ups!

haha, the word verification below is nastriti. Thought that was appropriate.

So sad that I had moved out before that fun incident. I remember hearing you guys talk about it though. I imagine I would have been no help at all. I don't do well with disgustingness.

Dart boards rock! I think they should be a standard fixture in college apartments.

Thanks Emily! I was going to say 'underwear' and leave just a TINY bit to the imagination :)

But yes Brecken - I remember this one pretty well(although I have a terrible memory too!). I do remember that Emily was a bit of a hero of the day. I also have a memory of helping you move all your stuff up onto your bed :) And I remember you and I sizing up the window in the kitchen (honestly, it would have been a better story if we'd tried to climb out of that tiny window! lol). Mostly, I just remember that we laughed A LOT that day :) It was pretty inconvenient, and the smells were really grosh, and the water was NOT clear... but when all was said and done, a little drama and a good story is never SUCH a bad thing :)

I think Peta and Jenny let us use their shower as well since it all happened pretty early in the morning, and you and I were watching a movie on TV when it started, weren't we?

Our early Saturday morning movies were a fun occasional tradition too, now that I think of it!

Yeah, I loved that hallway. The quoteboard was the other thing you left out. Hours of fun spent at that board!

I was so blessed to have such wonderful roomates!

Did you know we had a horrible stinky sewer-back-up flood the day we were hosting the entire cast of Together Again at our house for dinner? That was a total nightmare. Just what you want your house to smell like when you're entertaining celebrities! :)

Oh, and then there was the 4th of July flood...which rivaled Jeremiah throwing up on Christmas morning in our list of memorable holiday highlights.

Sorry, floods are obviously a hot button for me right now...
