Elizabeth Mitchell at Madison Square Kids

If you listen to the same music as me you have probably already heard of Elizabeth Mitchell (not the actress on Lost). And if you listen to the same music as me and haven't heard her yet you are in for a treat. She has a lovely voice, and manages to choose perfect songs. Listening to her (and singing along) is a wonderful experience.

Her albums are marketed toward children not because they have overwhelming beat, annoying lyrics, or general musical chaos, but because she sings in a register that children can sing along with, and she sings good songs that have either lasted through time, or will. A little folk, a little modified rock, even some Bob Marley. Reuben and I know about half the songs she sings from Musikgarten.

So, when I saw she was going to be at Madison Square Kids I couldn't pass it up, and I even went so far as to tell our play group to go too. I was hesitant to do that because Madison Square park isn't necessarily near us. I really enjoyed listening to her live (she was just as good as on her albums, which I think is the sign of a real musician.)

Reuben has been singing "Peace Like a River" all afternoon, except he sings the "Love like an ocean" verse. She taught ASL for the song, and he has been waving his arm around with ocean. So while he danced to Bo Diddley, I'm glad he also came home with a new song to sing.

We made a day out of it by having Shake Shack for lunch. This Daddy-working-at-night is pretty great considering it means we get to do fun stuff like this.

Fun! I'm sad we had to miss it. We went to the M of Nat History with Nate's parents. Did other people from the ward go?

Brecken, Neil and I are toying with the idea of popping over to the States in November. Can you tell me what NY is like at that time of the year?

I'm always trying to find non-annoying music that I can get for Molly. I'm comforted to know that it's not just me that thinks most music geared towards kids is a little over-whelming. I'll have to check her out!

I'll have to look into her, thanks for the music tip. :) I got your message last night and was about to call you back (at 9 pm, realizing its 11 your time, uh yeah, maybe not) ;). Anyway, my phone has been dead all day so I'll FB you my questions. Thanks!!

Non-annoying is the all-important key word that rules out most music marketed for children. I haven't listened to her yet, but it sounds like I should...

Glad you had such a great time.

Free concerts in the park are wonderful!

So are Reuben's rockin' glasses :) Are they still the same ones from when Talyn and Kevin came to visit?

PS. Glad you're enjoying your summer!
