The smiles returning to the faces

I stepped in squishy dog poop yesterday. And it got me thinking, do you think those dogs really like pooping on the sidewalk...in the middle of the sidewalk? No tickle of grass on their nether regions, no privacy of tall ferns. I decided, beside my refusal to take allergy medicine everyday because I'd be allergic to myself, I wouldn't want to be a dog in the city.

Poor Reuben has been cooped up all winter. He is a lot like a dog. Loves attention, gets yappy when he doesn't get enough attention, loves to nuzzle into your side where ever he can reach, spends hours gazing out the window, or scratching at the door. It is one of his inherent needs to have space to run around. He needs it, there is just no getting around it.

So I packed up a fleece blanket, and the book I'm reading (Cold Mountain) and we went over to the park. I sat on the sunny bench, with the blanket wrapped around my legs to protect them from the wind, and half-hearted-ly read while Reuben ran only stopping to sit on a swing, or slide down a slide. We were the only ones there, except for the steady stream of taxi drivers using the restroom (its one of my pet peeves about that playground, the strange men-without children-who strut in like they belong there. Last summer a biker in spandex came and derobed down to his skin time spandex shorts and rinsed off in the sprinklers, and I decided I was not allowed to wear my swimming suit to the sprinklers no matter how hot I was.)

I had a beatles song running through my head for the rest of the day, I'm afraid it will be running through my head for a few more weeks.

I will be the one to tell him when he is old enough, that his mother confused him with a dog. I have to do it. It is my civic duty as his uncle.

I don't know about dogs--even though Chloe has plenty of grass to poop on, she sometimes still seems to prefer the tile of our dining room. It drives me crazy, because she only does it when we're not home so I can't catch her in the act. Given the choice between the dog and a child, I'd take a child (although the dog is nice).

I remember feeling that need to run and be free outside when I was little.... I wonder when that need became the occasional pleasant half thought that it now is...
