Red, errr, Blue Velvet Cake

I wanted a red velvet cake, so I decided to use the Magnolia Bakery Recipe.

Reuben wanted to help.

I learned a very important lesson: Don't try a new recipe with a two year old helping. And if you are going to make a cake with a two year old, you should probably do it from a box.

In my hurry to keep Reuben's fingers out of the batter, I did something really really stupid called ruined all of the work we had done. The last step is to stir together some vinigar and baking soda, and for some crazy reason I poured a cup and a half of vinegar. When I did it I thought, "this is a lot of vinegar, almost as much vinegar as sugar, I think this is wrong." But Reuben was starting to complain, and I knew some bubbles would excite him, so I added the baking soda and then dumped it into our nice red batter.

I baked it. And thought the smell of vinegar was going to make me vomit, and then I tasted a crumb, and I was very sad.

So, after I put Reuben down for a nap, I made it again, but with only one and a half teaspoons of vinegar. Since we were out of red food coloring I used blue. Its frosted and waiting in the fridge for us to eat it.

Sounds wonderful Brecken :) I'll watch for the photos! I know it ruined the first cake, but I think it's great you let Reuben help - I have wonderful childhood memories of 'cooking with my mother'... I wonder how many recepies she had to repeat when I'd wandered off again? ;)

PS. It's exciting that Reuben is taking afternoon naps again....

If it makes you feel any better, I was making stroganoff (sp?!?) one night and it called for a dash of garlic salt.

I went to shake a little into the mixture and the lid flew off, causing about a cup of garlic salt to land in the pan.

In an attempt to save the dish, I tried scooping out the majority of the garlic salt, but it was definitely not a winner.

Can't wait to see the blue velvet cake!

This is why I don't cook. Remember the lemonade-flavored Spanish rice?

I think this is the most delicious "normal" cake Brecken has ever made (meaning not cheesecake or pie or eclair cake, etc.)--and it goes on my birthday list :)
