Grandma Wanda's 90th Birthday Party

My grandma turned 90, and the family got together for it, well the family in a close proximity to Salt Lake. But there was a picture of everyone there, everyone sent family pictures. They are gathered together in a binder. Her 5 children, all her grandchildren (21), and great grandchildren (over 40). While I was putting our family picture in, we looked at it together. She said, "I never knew there were so many people that loved me." While it would be better for her not to need the reminder as often as she does, it has been reported that she spends a lot of time looking at that binder of family photos and enjoys it. During the party, she mostly sat and watched, while we took our turns sitting next to her and talking to her.

I've always had a special affection for my grandma. She used to firmly tell us to just ask for what we want, or to have an opinion. She could make wonder bread, american cheese, pickles and miracle whip a magical sandwich. One of my earliest memories is watching Grandma, my mom, and aunt Sandi making cabbage patch dolls and dresses. She always has a project she is working on.

Jordan took most of these photos.

For the birthday cake we had two Grandma Wanda cakes. Banana Cake, which I remember he making. She would make it one night, then wrap it all up, and put it out in the fridge in the garage, and we couldn't eat it until the next day. That way the Bananas had a chance to get mushy. And Lulu Day Dessert. It's named after a lady, not a holiday. I don't have a copy of Grandma's official banana cake recipe, but I'm pretty sure it says, "beat the tar out of it." or, maybe it's boil.

Lulu Day Dessert
Beat 2 whole eggs
Add:
1 Cup Sugar
1 tsp. Vanilla

Sift Together:
1 Cup Flour
1/2 tsp. Salt
1 tsp. Baking Powder

Stir lightly into first mixture.

Heat to boiling point:
1/2 Cup Milk
2 tsp. Butter

Add to mixture and mix well. Pour into greased and floured pan. Bake 30 minutes at 325.

Topping:
6 Tbsp. Melted Butter
15 Tbsp. Brown Sugar
6 Tbsp. Cream
1 Cup Coconut.

Mix and broil on cake for 2 minutes.

The Cabbage patch dolls were made by Grandma, aunt Cheryl and your mom. I still have a business card and some doll parts I was going to put together for my kids.
