The Prophet of Our Generation

President Gordon B. Hinckley passed away this evening at age 97. We loved him. He was the Prophet of our generation. I say that because for me, when I went through the years of my youth when I most sought to know for myself about the truths of the Gospel and hearing with more attention the words of the prophets and apostles, he was at the helm, having been called in 1995. I know he was (and is) a man of God and that he was called to be His mouthpiece on the earth. He will be missed--but we are also glad that he has gone to be with his beloved wife. Please read the article recounting moments of his life and service in the Salt Lake Tribune:

I was sad for a moment when I heard the news yesterday, but then I just got so excited for President Hinckley. Now he's with his wife and is free to keep building God's kingdom. I'm sad for us, and he really was the prophet I've grown up with - I can't imagine anyone else leading us - but really, I'm so excited for him. He faught a great fight and was a wonderful comfort and example for and to me.

PS. On a slightly more selfish note, I'm also sad that Elder Cook, the new apostle, won't be speaking to the saints here in Brisbane tomorrow night after all. It was a special fireside visit and I was really looking forward to it. But now he's had to be called back to Salt Lake. Which is to be expected of course. Hopefully he'll get to come back and see us sometime!
